In the Great Northern Conference boys’ basketball game on December 6, 2024, the Escanaba High School team faced Kingsford, each coming in with different situations. Escanaba, fresh from a back-to-back win the previous night, fell short against Kingsford, who had a 10-day break and a season-opening victory. The game ended with a 73-47 win for the Flivvers.

Coach Tom Gereau commended his team’s effort despite the loss, acknowledging Kingsford as a formidable opponent. Although Escanaba started strong with an early lead, turnovers allowed the Flivvers to gain momentum. Gavin Grondin led with 29 points, contributing to Kingsford’s commanding lead.

Esky didn’t back down, narrowing the gap before halftime with a series of successful plays, including several three-pointers. Despite a hopeful halftime break, the Eskymos struggled to recover in the second half as the Flivvers extended their lead.

While Kingsford celebrated their 2-0 start under new coach Ben Olsen, both teams acknowledged areas for improvement. Escanaba, with a 3-2 record, is optimistic about their progress as they anticipate the return of key players. Gereau highlighted the team’s improved effort and attitude, focusing on their potential once fully operational.

Looking ahead, Escanaba will host Norway while Kingsford hits the road to face Ishpeming Westwood. Despite the loss, both teams remain determined to refine their performance in the upcoming games.
