MP Stephanie Peacock: Small Businesses’ Significance for the Economy in Barnsley
Small businesses play a vital role in our local communities and economy. From cozy cafes to charming corner shops, these local businesses are the heart and soul of Barnsley. The hardworking owners pour their heart and soul into keeping their doors open, but unfortunately, many have struggled in recent years.
Under the 14 years of Conservative government, we’ve seen too many high street shops and local businesses forced to close their doors. In 2023 alone, over 6,000 pubs and 10,000 shops across the country shut down. This trend has also brought increased challenges, with high levels of shoplifting and violence faced by shop workers and business owners, showing a 29% increase in incidents.
The UK currently ranks last in business investment in the G7, trailing behind countries like Slovenia, Latvia, and Hungary. Recognizing the importance of supporting small businesses, I stand behind initiatives like Small Business Saturday, which highlights the critical role local businesses play in creating jobs, growth, and opportunities.
Small business owners deserve a government that supports them and takes actionable steps to help them thrive. That’s why I’m proud to see the Labour government’s commitment to supporting small businesses. Labour has announced a comprehensive package of policies that include permanently lowering business rates for shops, pubs, and leisure businesses. This initiative will be funded by ensuring that online giants pay their fair share of taxes.
Local businesses need all the support they can get, and it’s heartening to see initiatives like Small Business Saturday and Labour’s policies aimed at helping them succeed. By championing our beloved local businesses, we can create a thriving, vibrant community for all.
