Kahele appointed as OHA Board chair
Kai Kahele was recently sworn in as the new chair of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs Board of Trustees during a ceremony. By taking on this role, he follows in the footsteps of trustee Carmen “Hulu” Lindsey, who held the position for the past four years. Kahele expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him by his fellow trustees and promised to lead with transparency and collaboration.
Trustee Keoni Souza was also elected as the board’s vice-chair, showing a commitment to shared decision-making. The oath of office was administered to the newly elected and reelected OHA trustees by Hawaii Supreme Court associate justice Todd Eddins in a ceremony prior to the board meeting. Alongside Kahele, trustees Kelii Akina, Luana Alapa, and Dan Ahuna officially began their terms.
Kahele’s election follows his recent victory in representing Hawaii island in the November General Election. This marks his return to elected office after an unsuccessful gubernatorial bid. With an impressive background that includes serving in the Hawaii Air National Guard and as a U.S. representative, Kahele brings a wealth of experience to his new position.
Born in Milolii on Hawaii Island, Kahele has an extensive educational background, graduating from Hilo High School and earning a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. He also holds a master’s degree in strategic studies from the U.S. Army War College. His work as a commercial pilot for Hawaiian Airlines adds another dimension to his career, complemented by his experience in the Hawaii Senate prior to his congressional service.
CEO Stacy Kealohalani Ferreira expressed excitement about the future with Kahele at the helm, highlighting the opportunities to address challenges and serve the Hawaiian communities effectively. With Kahele’s dedication and the board’s collective efforts, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs looks to a promising future of innovation and transformation to better support its beneficiaries.
