Will Smith and Janet Hubert, his on-screen mom from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, didn’t always have the best relationship when the show was in production. Hubert left the series in 1993 due to “creative differences” with Smith, who was 21 at the time, and was replaced by Daphne Maxwell Reid. However, during the filming of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air Reunion special for HBO Max in 2020, the pair reconciled. Smith admitted in a recent interview with Vice’s Black Comedy in America that he had underestimated Hubert’s importance to him during that time.

Their relationship has continued to evolve, with Hubert sharing in a 2021 interview that they frequently text each other and have a good rapport now. Looking back, she believes that had they been able to communicate better back then, things might have turned out differently.

Smith has been doing some soul-searching lately and is set to release a new gospel album that reflects this introspective period. In an interview with iHeartRadio, he shared that his deep roots in the church inspired him to create music that speaks to the spirit. The upcoming album is a natural expression of this energy and a reflection of his personal growth.
