In a previous article, I raved about the TEAC VRDS-701T CD transport, praising its unique sound quality that I described as “dense and precise in a way I had never previously heard from digital.” This time, I had the opportunity to test out the TEAC UD-701N converter/streamer/preamplifier, a matching component to the VRDS-701T.

During my review period, I was struck by the sheer amount of data that the 701T extracted from CDs and turned into music. Now, with the UD-701N, I’m fascinated by how it processes and delivers this data to make every DAC it’s paired with sound more dynamic and lively.

At the core of the UD-701N is a custom-developed TEAC ΔΣ discrete DAC, which sets it apart from the typical chip DACs found in many systems. This discrete DAC incorporates FPGA technology and original algorithms to handle DSD and PCM signals with precision. With the capacity for playback of high-resolution DSD and PCM files, the UD-701N offers a truly immersive listening experience.

To combat vibrations and maintain audio quality, TEAC equipped the UD-701N with four floating toroidal power transformers and specialized feet to reduce vibrations. The brushed-aluminum front panel ties in with TEAC’s other 700-series components, creating a sleek and cohesive aesthetic that fits into various environments.

Using the UD-701N was a delight, with a tactile mechanical power switch, precise selector and volume knobs, and a sophisticated OLED display. The output-buffer circuits provide a strong sense of drive, ensuring that audio signals are transmitted dynamically without any loss.

One of my concerns was whether the analog inputs remained analog throughout the process. After confirming with TEAC’s engineers, I learned that the 701N maintains analog signals from input to output, without any digital conversion. The volume control is also analog-based, utilizing TEAC’s Quad Volume Control System for precise volume adjustments.

In addition to its impressive features, the UD-701N offers Bluetooth connectivity and is Roon Ready. The included remote and companion apps for desktop and mobile devices make it easy to control and enjoy high-quality audio.

Overall, my listening experience with the UD-701N was exceptional, with the device handling complex recordings with finesse and precision. Its ability to maintain audio integrity and provide a dynamic listening experience sets it apart as a top contender in the world of streaming entertainment.
