Peacock Race Renaming Honored in Racing Community
Breeder David Peacock’s contributions to racing have not gone unnoticed. In recognition of his achievements, the prestigious Listed Oaklands Plate has been renamed in his honour. Peacock, a recipient of the Matrice Honour Award in 2018, an inductee into the SA Racing Hall of Fame, and a life member of the South Australian Jockey Club, has left an indelible mark on the industry.
Throughout the years, his distinctive lime green colors have been carried by talented horses like Maybe Discreet, winner of the 2013 Group 1 Australasian Oaks, and Too Darn Discreet, who recently claimed victory in the G2 Manifold Stakes. This honor has left Peacock delighted, stating that racing and breeding horses has been a rewarding part of his life.
Peacock’s legacy has been lauded by SAJC Chairman Judith Jones and Racing SA Chairman Rob Rorrison. The renaming of the Oaklands Plate is seen as a fitting tribute to his profound contributions to the industry.
The David Peacock Oaklands Plate is a vital opportunity for late-developing two-year-olds to make their mark early in their careers, according to Racing SA. Notably, past winners of the event, such as Instant Celebrity and Coco Sun, went on to achieve Group 1 success in subsequent seasons.
Scheduled for June 28 next year at Morphettville, the David Peacock Oaklands Plate holds even greater significance as a lead-up event to the Group 3 SA Sires’ Produce Stakes, the final two-year-old Stakes race of the season in Australia. This race is a valuable platform for emerging equine talent to gain black-type status early in their careers.
