Disney+ Sued Over IRA Murder Portrayal in “Say Nothing”
Marian Price, a former member of the Irish Republican Army, has taken legal action against Disney+ for its representation of her in the series “Say Nothing” on FX/Hulu. The show suggests her involvement in the murder of Jean McConville, one of the Disappeared during the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Price contests this portrayal and has filed a lawsuit, claiming that the streamer is exploiting her story for entertainment.
In response to these allegations, Price’s lawyer, Peter Corrigan, condemned the portrayal, stating that it lacks any evidence to support the claims. The legal action aims to hold Disney+ accountable for the harm caused to Price by their depiction in the series.
“Say Nothing” delves into McConville’s disappearance and the complexities of the Troubles in Northern Ireland. Michael McConville, her son, criticized the series in an interview with “The Irish News,” describing it as “cruel” and unsuitable for entertainment considering the tragic events his family endured.
The legal battle between Marian Price and Disney+ sheds light on the sensitivity required when depicting historical events, especially those with deep emotional significance for those directly impacted. The outcome of the lawsuit will determine the boundaries of storytelling and the ethics of entertainment platforms in portraying real-life events.
