December is shaping up to be an exciting month for fans of Korean content on streaming platforms, with two highly anticipated releases making their debuts. In one corner, we have Disney+ bringing us “Light Shop,” a series based on the 2011 webtoon of the same name, written by screenwriter Kang Full, known for their work on the popular series “Moving” (2023). In the other corner, Netflix is gearing up for the release of the second season of the global phenomenon, “Squid Game.”

Despite the upcoming competition between Disney+ and Netflix, the director of “Light Shop,” Kim Hie-won, is staying cool and confident. “Competition is inevitable when it comes to success,” he shared during the press conference held in Seoul. He believes that the show has the potential to warm the hearts of audiences around the world and hopes it will become one of the most-watched titles.

The concept of “Light Shop” revolves around a mysterious shop located at the end of a dark alley, where customers bring their hidden secrets. The show features a stellar cast, including actors like Ju Ji-hoon, Park Bo-young, Um Tae-gu, Seolhyun, and more. The episodes are set to be released in batches, with four episodes dropping initially and the rest following in groups of two.

For Kang Full, bringing “Light Shop” to life was an opportunity to expand on ideas that were previously confined to 2-D drawings. The process allowed the writer to explore deeper relationships between characters and deliver a narrative that is rich in emotions.

As for future projects, Kang Full hinted at the possibility of connecting the “Light Shop” universe with his other works, like “Moving.” However, he emphasized that each series has its own unique emotional journey. “Light Shop” promises to blend horror, thriller, and melodrama elements, offering viewers a captivating and emotionally resonant experience.

Director Kim, making his directorial debut with the series, impressed the cast with his meticulous preparation and thoughtful approach to storytelling. Despite the friendly rivalry between “Light Shop” and “Squid Game,” fans can look forward to a December filled with gripping stories and unforgettable characters on their favorite streaming platforms.
