If you thought “The Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist” was just a punchline, think again! This notorious theft actually happened in Quebec between 2011 and 2012, where thieves made off with over 3,000 tons of syrup, netting a cool $20 million in the process by swapping it out with water. Intriguing, right? Well, that’s where “The Sticky” comes in, a new show on Prime Video that takes a lighthearted approach to this sticky situation.

Margo Martindale shines in the lead role as Ruth Landry, a spirited syrup farmer who’s tired of playing by Big Syrup’s rules. But here’s the twist: Ruth and her crew are completely fictional characters. The show cleverly dances around the heist itself, focusing more on the wacky schemes and camaraderie of Ruth and her band of misfits.

Martindale’s portrayal of Ruth is top-notch, with her charismatic presence anchoring the show. Alongside her are Remy, played by Guillaume Cyr, a cunning security guard, and Mike, portrayed by the hilarious Chris Diamantopoulos, a disgraced gangster with a penchant for Boston flair. Watching these three navigate their harebrained schemes is a riot, making for some good-natured fun that’s a far cry from your typical crime drama.

Directors Michael Dowse and Joyce Wong inject a vibrant energy into the series, while also giving room for character moments to shine. Martindale’s expressive face adds depth to her character, highlighting the nuances of her performance with every little expression.

While the show hits its stride when the trio is on screen together, the addition of Jamie Lee Curtis as Bo, a larger-than-life villain, feels a bit forced. Despite some missteps, the chemistry among the core cast members keeps the show engaging and light-hearted.

Although “The Sticky” might not be Prime Video’s most heavily promoted show, it’s a hidden gem worth checking out. With its charming cast and breezy premise, it’s a delightful escape from the usual TV fare. So, pour yourself a tall stack of pancakes and settle in for a sweet and entertaining ride with “The Sticky” – you won’t be disappointed!
