“Disclaimer” Review

Oh boy, let’s talk about “Disclaimer,” the limited series that had everyone buzzing. Imagine this: a successful woman named Catherine, played by the talented Cate Blanchett, receives a mysterious book that threatens to unveil her deepest secrets. Sounds juicy, right?

So, Catherine, a documentary journalist from London, is riding high on her career when this book called “The Perfect Stranger” lands in her lap. Cue the drama! The book hints at a scandalous affair from Catherine’s past, and things start to spiral out of control from there.

Flashback time! We see young Catherine, played by Leila George, allegedly getting involved with a young man named Jonathan, played by Louis Partridge, during a vacation in Italy. Drama, drama, drama!

Fast forward to the present, and we have Jonathan’s grieving parents, played by Kevin Kline and Leslie Manville, wreaking havoc by spreading scandalous rumors about Catherine. Things get messy, with Catherine’s son Nicholas, played by Kodi Smit-McPhee, and her husband Robert, played by Sasha Baron Cohen, getting pulled into the chaos.

The show, based on Renee Knight’s thrilling book, is brought to life by the talented Alfonso Cuaron, known for his work on “Roma” and “Gravity.” The first six episodes dive deep into the scandal and gossip, with the seventh episode finally allowing Catherine to defend herself against the crazy accusations.

But, here’s the kicker, folks! The show plays up the melodrama a bit too much, with some narration that feels overly preachy. You win some, you lose some, right?

On a scale of 1 to 10, “Disclaimer” lands at a solid 5 for me. If you’re looking for a binge-worthy drama, all episodes are now available for streaming on Apple TV+.

So grab your popcorn and settle in for a wild ride with “Disclaimer”! Your couch potato adventure awaits.
