Amazon Prime Experiences Outage Before Chiefs Game, Resulting in Complaints from NFL Viewers
Amazon Prime Video experienced a temporary outage just before a scheduled NFL game, as reported by users. This interruption coincided with the start of the Kansas City Chiefs versus Las Vegas Raiders game on Black Friday. The outage was noted by DownDetector, with reports spiking around 2:50 pm ET.
Typically, Amazon Prime Video streams Thursday Night Football games, but this special holiday match was in addition to the usual schedule of games broadcast on free-to-air television. During the game, there was an incident where Amazon missed a play due to an “administrative error” by officials. This led to confusion as the penalty initially called against the Chiefs was reversed, resulting in a re-punt while Amazon was still in a commercial break.
Fans took to social media to express their frustration with the stream quality, with some noting poor picture quality and freezing issues. This outage followed similar issues faced by Netflix during the Jake Paul versus Mike Tyson event. In response to the complaints, Travis Kelce, who played in the game, jokingly warned Netflix not to ruin Christmas for NFL fans with subpar coverage during their upcoming games.
Despite the temporary setback, Amazon Prime Video is set to broadcast an NFL playoff game in January and will also be part of the NFL’s Christmas Day doubleheader this year. Let’s hope they have their streaming capabilities in top shape by then!
