Allan Sperling, a seasoned executive with experience at MultiChoice and Viacom, is stepping into a new role as the Group Vice President of Programming, Networks, and Streaming for WBD Nordics, starting December 2.

Based in Stockholm, Sperling will take on this exciting position in January, where he will be in charge of strategic program planning and operations for WBD’s offerings in Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and Finland. His focus will be on creating local Nordic content for the streaming platform Max, catering to the interests of the regional audience.

This move marks a shift in WBD’s approach, indicating a fresh dedication to original Nordic productions. Previously, there had been a reduction in HBO Max originals, but with Sperling’s appointment, there is a newfound emphasis on scripted programming, alongside the exploration of unscripted content.

In a memo to staff, Christina Sulebakk, EVP and Managing Director of WBD Nordics, confirmed the organizational changes and expressed appreciation for former Head of Channels Graham Lafferty’s contributions to the Nordics. Lafferty has since transitioned into a new role as SVP, Content Strategy and Networks for the UK & Ireland.

With a wealth of experience spanning over two decades in the industry, Sperling has held key positions at Showmax, MultiChoice, and Viacom in different locations globally. Notably, he spearheaded successful projects like Deadline’s Global Breakout series, DAM, during his tenure as Showmax’s Executive Vice President of Content.

In his new role, Sperling is excited to contribute to Warner Bros. Discovery’s legacy by delivering top-notch content that resonates with Nordic audiences. His strategic vision for Max’s channels and local production initiatives is expected to drive growth and innovation in WBD’s Nordic operations, as emphasized by Sulebakk.

This announcement coincides with MultiChoice CEO Marc Jury’s upcoming departure and Denmark’s plans to introduce a US$17.5M production rebate to boost TV and film shoots in the country, showcasing a commitment to enhancing the region’s production landscape.
