Unit Launches Film and TV VFX Division: Exciting Update for Industry

Unit, known for their exceptional visual effects work, has recently made an exciting announcement. They have launched a film and TV VFX division, and their debut project is the Paramount+ drama series called Stags. The head of this new division is Amanda Luckwell, co-founder of Unit, who will be collaborating with talented artists like VFX supervisor Nuno Pereira to bring their creative visions to life. With over 20 VFX artists on board, the team is dedicated to delivering top-notch visual effects for film and TV projects.

In their first project, Unit worked on creating a CG photoreal gorilla and CG environments for Eleven Film’s production Stags. This gripping series follows the story of Stu, played by Nico Mirallegro, as he embarks on a stag do in South America with his friends, only to find themselves caught in a dangerous situation on a lawless prison island controlled by two rival siblings.

For Stags, Unit produced over 300 VFX shots over a span of 17 weeks, featured across three episodes. Pereira led the team in capturing realistic movements, fur textures, eye expressions, and overall emotive performance from the CG gorilla. Luckwell expressed pride in their team’s meticulous attention to detail in creating the intricate CG character ‘El Niño’ and the VFX environments that seamlessly integrated into the series to enhance the storytelling without overshadowing it.

Pereira shared his excitement for the project, especially in the challenge of bringing the CG gorilla to life. The team’s focus on achieving a photoreal and authentic look involved detailed animation and precise lighting techniques to ensure that the creature felt like a natural part of the story, enriching the tension and drama of the series.
