The House of Donyale Luna: Redefining Legacy in the Ballroom Community
The House of Donyale Luna, a vibrant force in the ballroom community, honors the legacy of Donyale Luna, the first Black model on the cover of Vogue. Founded by William Bailey, known as Founding Father ICON Bugz DONYALE LUNA, the house is more than just a competitive entity—it’s a celebration of empowerment and Black excellence. By combining Luna’s legacy with the creativity of its members, the House of Donyale Luna continues to inspire and make its mark in ballroom history.
Originally considering a different name, Bailey was inspired to name the house after Donyale Luna after watching the HBO Max documentary “Supermodel.” Co-founding the house with Aoki Donyale Luna, Bailey wanted to bring the name of the mother of all supermodels into the ballroom world and create a legacy in her honor.
The house’s values of Family, Cockiness, Support, Respect, Humility, Community, Quality, and Love guide its members. Standout members like Primo Donyale Luna and Gerri Donyale Luna have secured wins in various categories, solidifying the house’s reputation. Newer members like Dream DL and Gia DL also contribute to the house’s success and support its growth.
Bailey finds fulfillment in seeing the passion and growth of his members and aims to nurture future ballroom leaders. Ballroom has been transformative for Bailey, helping him find his voice and create a lasting legacy with the House of Donyale Luna. Looking ahead, Bailey hopes the house will be recognized as one of the best, emphasizing positive energy and mutual respect within the community.
In closing, Bailey expresses gratitude to the members, highlighting their amazing contributions and unity within the house. He believes in the unique energy of the House of Donyale Luna and hopes it spreads throughout the ballroom community.
