Coping with Dementia: Understanding Pre-Death Grief

In a recent interview, Kola Bokinni, known for his role as Isaac McAdoo in Ted Lasso, opened up about his experience dealing with grief and his father’s battle with dementia. Bokinni shared that his father, Taiwo, passed away last year after living with vascular dementia for five years. While juggling long days on set and caring for his father at night, Bokinni found solace in memories of his dad, who was a beloved figure in their Peckham community.

Reflecting on his father’s passing, Bokinni embarked on a journey of healing by participating in BBC’s Celebrity Race Around The World in South America. During his time in Argentina, he found comfort in the realization that grief is a natural part of life, much like the unpredictability of memories. Bokinni fondly remembers his dad’s scent of fresh newspapers, old-school cologne, and cigarettes, along with his affinity for reading newspapers and humming tunes.

Growing up in Peckham, Bokinni often spent time in the pub where his mother worked, gaining exposure to various aspects of adult life. He credits his father for instilling him with morals, manners, and a sense of balance. Despite his parents’ divorce when he was young, Bokinni cherished the time spent with his dad, who was like an uncle to many in the neighborhood. His dad’s home provided a safe haven for him and his friends, offering a space for laughter, food, and music.

Bokinni also reflects on the importance of his father’s presence during his formative years in Peckham, highlighting his role as a tutor and mentor to local kids after school. Their bond provided Bokinni with a sense of security in a sometimes challenging environment. As Bokinni navigates the complexities of grief and loss, he finds strength in the memories of his father’s love and guidance throughout his life.
