Apple and M. Night Shyamalan Facing Trial in ‘Servant’ Copyright Suit revives
An independent director has successfully revived a case against the creators of Apple TV+ show “Servant” over alleged similarities to a 2013 independent film called “The Truth About Emanuel.” The US District Court for the Central District of California ruled that there were enough similarities and factual disputes to warrant a trial, denying a motion for summary judgment by Apple Inc., writer Tony Basgallop, and executive producer M. Night Shyamalan.
The court found that writer and director Francesca Gregorini presented enough evidence of similarity and raised questions about access to the original film, requiring a jury to make a decision. This decision marks a significant development in the ongoing legal battle between the two parties.
As the case now moves forward toward trial, the outcome remains uncertain. It will be interesting to see how the court ultimately resolves this dispute between the creators of “Servant” and the indie director who claims their work was infringed upon. Stay tuned for further updates on this legal showdown.
