Wolf’s Director Cancels Sequel Due to Studio Abandoning Cinema Release
The director of the movie “Wolfs” made a tough decision to cancel the sequel after some last-minute changes by Apple executives. Originally, the plan was for “Wolfs” to be released in cinemas, but just weeks before its premiere, Apple announced that it would debut on their streaming service, Apple TV+ instead.
This change in release strategy led to some drama behind the scenes. Despite initially being excited about the film, director Jon Watts was taken aback by the sudden pivot to a streaming-only release. This unexpected move made Watts lose confidence in Apple as a creative partner, so he decided to quietly give back the money set aside for the sequel.
In an interview, Watts expressed his disappointment in Apple’s decision and explained that he had not been informed of the change until shortly before it was announced to the public. He had hoped to keep the news of a sequel under wraps until the situation was clearer but was overruled by the studio’s press release.
Even though he is no longer pursuing the sequel, Watts remains open to working with the original cast again in the future. Despite missing the Venice Film Festival premiere of “Wolfs” due to a case of Covid, the film eventually made its way to Apple TV+ in September after a brief stint in limited cinemas.
It’s clear that this director values integrity and trust in his creative partnerships, and the situation with “Wolfs” serves as a reminder that sometimes, even the best-laid plans can take unexpected turns.
