Why the DCU Is Not the Same as the DC Comics Universe

As we gear up for the launch of DC Studios’ New DCU and the debut of Max’s Creature Commandos on December 5th, one topic that’s been making the rounds on social media is the idea of origin stories. People are wondering who really needs to have their backstory shown on screen, and who doesn’t. James Gunn, the co-CEO of DC Studios, has some thoughts on the matter. When it comes to characters like Batman and Superman, Gunn believes that their origins are well-known and don’t need to be retold (“I’m not telling Batman and Superman’s origin stories again because everyone knows them”). And let’s be honest, we’ve seen Spider-Man’s story retold so many times that it’s practically ingrained in our brains.

But that doesn’t mean DC Studios is ignoring origin stories altogether. Gunn is clear that characters who the audience may not be as familiar with will definitely get their time to shine. Take Plastic Man, for example. While many people know who he is, how many could actually tell you his origin story on the spot?

In response to a fan’s question about whether general audiences need backstories to connect with the New DCU characters, Gunn made it clear that not everyone feels that way. He emphasized that The DCU is a separate universe from the DC Comics Universe, and not all timelines will align. Gunn points out that it’s impossible for all timelines to match up, especially considering the vast history of the comics universe spanning over 85 years.

In the end, it’s all about finding the right balance between honoring the familiar origins of beloved characters and introducing new ones in a way that’s engaging for both die-hard fans and newcomers alike. So, rest assured, origin stories will have their place in the New DCU, ensuring that everyone has a chance to connect with these iconic characters in a fresh and exciting way.
