Sequel ‘Wolfs’ Cancelled at Apple TV+ Due to Director Trust Issues
Apple TV+ fans may be disappointed to hear that the anticipated sequel to the action comedy film “Wolfs” has been canceled. Despite being the most viewed movie in Apple TV+ history, director Jon Watts made the decision to scrap the sequel, citing a lack of trust in Apple as a creative partner.
In an interview with Deadline, Watts explained that although Apple initially expressed excitement about the film and even commissioned him to begin working on a sequel, a sudden change in plans caught him by surprise. The shift from a promised theatrical release to a streaming release was made without consultation or explanation. Watts was taken aback when he learned of this decision just days before it was announced to the public. Feeling like the rug had been pulled out from under him, Watts requested that Apple not publicize the sequel, but his wishes were disregarded.
Despite the setback, Watts expressed gratitude for the opportunity to work with the talented cast, including Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Amy Ryan, Austin Abrams, and Richard Kind. However, due to the breakdown in trust between himself and Apple, Watts ultimately decided to walk away from the project.
Apple had previously announced plans for a “Wolfs” sequel in an August press release, with head of feature films Matt Dentler expressing excitement about revisiting the characters in a new adventure. The original film, directed by Watts, tells the story of two fixers played by Pitt and Clooney who team up to cover up a high-profile crime.
While the cancellation of the sequel may come as a disappointment, Apple TV+ subscribers can still enjoy the original film, which premiered in theaters on September 20 before landing on the streaming platform a week later. Stay tuned for more updates on upcoming projects from Apple TV+ and its talented filmmakers.
