Real Mormon Wives Speak Out: Not the “Soft Swinging” Hulu Stars

The success of Hulu’s provocative series “The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives” has generated an interesting response that’s worth exploring. The show, which made its mark with tales of “soft swinging” and other eye-catching scenarios, is about to make its debut on ABC in January. In response to this animated portrayal of Mormon women, eight faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints took matters into their own hands.

Without protest, these eight women wrote and published a book called “The Not-So-Secret Lives of REAL ‘Mormon’ Wives” to offer viewers a glimpse into the lives of more orthodox members of the faith. Notably, the formal name of the group is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a change initiated by the group’s president and prophet, Russell M. Nelson.

Contrary to popular stereotypes, the stories told in the book are far from what you might expect. There’s a diverse range of experiences shared, from a successful fashion entrepreneur dealing with the demands of her business and parenthood to a Zumba instructor advocating for her child born with Down syndrome.

One of the authors, Fernanda Böhme, a co-founder of a fashion house, shared that the Hulu series inspired her to reveal her journey of building her business and caring for a special-needs child. Rather than being upset by the series, she sees it as an opportunity to showcase the faith in a different light and address common misconceptions.

Kimberly DowDell, another author and a Zumba instructor, emphasized the role of her faith in navigating the challenges of motherhood and her husband’s career while debunking extreme portrayals seen in the Hulu show.

This book highlights the importance of faith in the lives of these Mormon wives and aims to provide a genuine perspective on how their beliefs help them overcome difficulties, big and small. It’s a refreshing take on the everyday lives of devout members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, distinct from the sensationalized picture painted by the entertainment industry.
