Prime Video Remake of Sarah Michelle Gellar Cult Classic Streaming Hit
Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, Hollywood seemed to have a knack for turning classic stories into modern teen hits. “Clueless,” based on Jane Austen’s “Emma,” “10 Things I Hate About You,” a take on Shakespeare’s “The Taming of the Shrew,” and “She’s All That,” inspired by “Pygmalion,” were all examples of this trend. Another standout was “Cruel Intentions,” a steamy tale of rich kids based on Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ “Les Liaisons dangereuses.”
The film was a success, thanks to its daring sensuality and a stellar cast led by Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon, and Selma Blair. It earned almost $80 million at the box office and spawned two sequels. So, it was no surprise when Prime Video decided to remake the cult classic for a new generation.
Fast forward to today, and the new series based on “Cruel Intentions” is making waves on the streaming platform. Starring Sarah Catherine Hook, Zac Burgess, and Savannah Lee Smith, the show is currently one of Prime Video’s top-rated dramas, trailing just behind “Cross.”
While the cast and creators seem up for the challenge, early reviews of the series have been mixed. With a modest 36% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, some critics are describing it as a run-of-the-mill teen drama. So, if you’re considering adding it to your watchlist, it might be worth checking out a few episodes first to see if it’s your cup of tea.
