Judge to review new evidence in Menendez brothers murder case amid Netflix series buzz

In Los Angeles, a judge will soon weigh in on whether fresh evidence should prompt a reevaluation of the convictions of Erik and Lyle Menendez for the shocking shotgun slaying of their parents more than three decades ago in Beverly Hills.

The Menendez brothers were convicted in 1989 for the brutal killings of Jose and Kitty Menendez and were sentenced to spend the rest of their lives behind bars. Throughout their trial, their defense team argued that the brothers had suffered sexual abuse at the hands of their father. In contrast, prosecutors contended that the brothers committed the heinous crime for financial gain. Despite multiple attempts to appeal their convictions, their efforts have been in vain.

Now, at ages 53 and 56, Erik and Lyle Menendez are hoping for a second chance at freedom. Their attorneys submitted a habeas corpus petition in May 2023, asking the court to review new evidence of the father’s reported abuse. The petition noted that this recently uncovered evidence aligns with their defense presented during the trial.

As the legal system deliberates on this case, the future of the Menendez brothers remains uncertain. Stay tuned for updates on this compelling and complex story.
