2024 Peacock Theatre Review of The Snowman
The Snowman, Peacock Theatre Review (2024)
Raymond Briggs’ 1978 book turned animated film in 1982 has become a holiday classic, capturing the hearts of both kids and adults with its tale of a magical snowman and a young boy’s journey to the North Pole. The live stage production by Birmingham Repertory Theatre has been running at the Peacock Theatre for 27 years, maintaining its charm and magic with each performance.
Director Bill Alexander brings the story to life without any dialogue, using music, staging, and Robert North’s choreography to transport the audience to a Winter wonderland. The opening scene sets the stage perfectly, showing the boy’s joy in the freshly fallen snow as he builds his snowman. Teddy Holton-Frances shines as the boy, expressing his excitement through lively movements and facial expressions. His dance skills and energy capture the essence of a young boy at play, engaging the audience with his interactions and reactions.
Andrew Ashton charms as the Snowman, captivating the children in the audience from the moment he comes to life. Despite the bulky costume, Ashton moves gracefully around the stage, adding humor with his icy persona. The interactions between the boy and the Snowman, along with the household cat played by Michaela Marrable, bring the story to life in a playful and endearing way.
The production includes fun sequences like a tropical-themed kitchen adventure and a thrilling motorbike ride through the woods, staying true to the book and film’s spirit. While some scenes may feel a bit lengthy, they build up to the iconic moment of “Walking in the Air,” which leaves the audience in awe.
Act Two introduces Father Christmas and a cast of snowmen, adding energy and joy to the stage. The Snowman’s dance with the Ice Princess is a standout moment, showcasing the talent of the performers. The arrival of the sinister Jack Frost adds a touch of suspense, expertly balancing between scary and entertaining as he interacts with the Snowman and Princess.
The Snowman at the Peacock Theatre is a festive treat, beautifully brought to life by a talented cast and creative team. The real snow falling on the audience at the end adds an extra touch of magic, leaving young viewers like the boy in front of me excited and happy. It’s a perfect way to kick off the holiday season, with an enchanting story that earns a resounding “TWENTY!” from the youngest fans in the audience. Don’t miss it at the Peacock Theatre until January 4, 2025. ★★★★
