Yang Liping’s The Peacock Performance on North Bund
Renowned dancer and choreographer Yang Liping has brought her iconic work “The Peacock” to the AIA Grand Theater on the North Bund, dazzling audiences with a mesmerizing dance drama that vividly illustrates the circle of life and nature through the enchanting tales of peacocks. While young dancers take on the major roles in this captivating performance, Yang herself makes a special appearance in the final chapter, showcasing her legendary talent and artistry.
Yang, who is now 66 years old, earned the nickname “Peacock Princess of China” for her captivating performance in the 1986 dance production “Spirit of the Peacock.” This groundbreaking work was inspired by the graceful arm and finger movements of the Dai peacock dance, a traditional art form of the Dai ethnic community in Yang’s hometown of Yunnan Province in southwest China. For Yang, peacocks symbolize beauty, and the deep admiration that people hold for these majestic birds reflects their innate desire and relentless pursuit of beauty in all its forms.
“The Peacock” first premiered in 2012, and the latest 2022 version has been revised to include a diverse ensemble of young dancers. Yang shared, “The biggest difference in this 2022 rendition is the participation of many young dancers, most of whom were born after the year 2000.” She expressed her joy in collaborating with the younger generation, imparting her wisdom and expertise to help them grasp the profound theme of the life cycle embodied in the production.
In this mesmerizing performance, dancers Qiao Yueyu, Wang Silong, and Ma Yuanhan shine in the leading roles of the female peacock, male peacock, and the crow, respectively. Yang revealed that her favorite roles in the dance are “Time” and “God.” She explained, “Time is impartial and fair to all, while God embodies subjectivity and offers inner strength and guidance to individuals.”
