Tim Robbins recently shared his concerns about the rise of streaming services in the entertainment industry, with a particular focus on Netflix. While promoting the second season of the dystopian series Silo on Apple TV+, Robbins expressed his belief that Hollywood could be in trouble if left solely in the hands of streaming giants. In Silo, Robbins plays the role of Bernard Holland, who oversees the silo’s IT department, alongside co-stars Rebecca Ferguson, David Oyelowo, and Rashida Jones.

The first season of Silo premiered in the summer of 2023 and received positive reviews from viewers. The second season started on November 15th, 2024, with new episodes releasing weekly on Apple TV+ until the end of January. In an interview with The Guardian, Robbins raised concerns about the dominance of streaming platforms and the algorithms they use to recommend content, questioning if this is truly the future of cinema.

Reflecting on his past successes, Robbins mentioned Frank Darabont’s 1994 film The Shawshank Redemption, in which he starred alongside Morgan Freeman. Despite initial commercial struggles, the film gained widespread acclaim over time and remains a beloved classic, even topping IMDb’s list of most favored movies. Robbins emphasized the longevity of quality films and TV shows, emphasizing that impact and lasting impression matter more than immediate success.

It’s undeniable that The Shawshank Redemption has stood the test of time as a cinematic gem. While some Netflix films may not reach the same iconic status, the quality of content remains a key factor in determining longevity.
