Spider-Man Director Explains Apple TV+ Sequel Cancellation
After creating three successful Spider-Man movies, director Jon Watts tried his hand at something new with Wolfs, a film he wrote himself. It was supposed to be the start of a whole series, complete with a cliffhanger ending that left fans eager for more. But unfortunately, despite the announcement of a sequel, Watts himself revealed that it’s not going to happen—and he’s explained why.
Surprisingly, it was Watts who decided to cancel the sequel, not Apple, the platform behind Wolfs. This decision came as a shock, especially since the film was a hit with viewers and became the most-watched feature film ever released on Apple TV+. So why did this happen?
Well, it all comes down to trust. Watts expected Wolfs to have a wide theatrical release, while Apple decided to only show it in a limited number of theaters before streaming it exclusively on their platform. This change in plans took everyone by surprise, especially those looking forward to the sequels.
When Watts showed Apple his final cut of Wolfs, they loved it and immediately asked him to start working on a sequel. But then, at the last minute, everything shifted to a streaming release without any real discussion or explanation. This sudden change left Watts feeling blindsided and ultimately led him to end plans for a sequel.
Despite returning the money he was given for the sequel and losing trust in Apple as a creative partner, Watts did mention that he had a great experience working with the cast and would be open to collaborating with them again on a different project. So even though a Wolfs sequel is off the table, there’s still a chance we’ll see this talented team back together on the big screen one day.
For now, you can watch Wolfs on Apple TV+ and see why it captured the attention of so many viewers and sparked hopes for a franchise that, unfortunately, won’t be coming to fruition.
