Sharon Horgan shares why she wanted Season 2 of ‘Bad Sisters’ for its ‘Fairy Tale’ vibes
Bad Sisters Season 2 is finally here, and according to star Sharon Horgan, it’s no fairy tale like the first season. The 54-year-old actor, who is also a co-developer on the Apple TV+ original series, shared that the new season focuses on the reality of what has happened to the Garvey girls. This shift to more realistic storytelling was Horgan’s driving force behind creating new episodes.
At the premiere of Bad Sisters Season 2, Horgan explained her reasons for wanting the series to return. She mentioned, “As much as I loved the first season and how it ended, it was a bit of a fairy tale. You know, like, woman lives happily ever after, [after] offing her other half.”
Taking place in Dublin, Ireland, the first season revolved around the Garvey sisters – Eva (Horgan), Bibi (Sarah Greene), Becka (Eve Hewson), and Ursula (Eva Burthistle) – as they attempted to get rid of their controlling and abusive brother-in-law, John Paul (Claes Bang), who was married to their sister, Grace (Anne-Marie Duff).
Season 1 concluded with John Paul meeting an unfortunate end, but it wasn’t at the hands of the Garvey sisters as initially intended. Grace was the one responsible for his demise. Now, in Bad Sisters Season 2, the happy ending from the first season gives way to a more realistic portrayal of the aftermath, shedding light on the challenges faced after being in an abusive relationship.
Horgan shared that the inspiration for Bad Sisters Season 2 came from the harsh realities of abusive relationships, isolation from family, and the difficulties of seeking help in such situations. She revealed that the idea for a second season started brewing midway through filming the first season, and that uncertainty lingered until it was confirmed.
Despite the heavy subject matter, the dark humor that fans enjoyed in the first season is still present in Bad Sisters Season 2. Horgan emphasized the importance of balancing humor with serious themes, ensuring that the show remains authentic and believable.
New episodes of Bad Sisters Season 2 premiere weekly on Apple TV+, with the season finale set to air just before Christmas. In the meantime, viewers can catch up on Bad Sisters Season 1, available for streaming on Apple TV+.
