A new study suggests that the consumption of sugary drinks may be linked to an increased risk of cancer. The research, published in the British Medical Journal, found that a higher intake of sugary beverages was associated with a higher risk of overall cancer and breast cancer.

The study analyzed data from over 100,000 French adults, with an average age of 42 years, who were followed for an average of nine years. Participants completed at least two 24-hour dietary records, which included all beverages consumed, and were monitored for cancer diagnoses.

The findings revealed that a 100ml per day increase in the consumption of sugary drinks was associated with an 18% increased risk of overall cancer and a 22% increased risk of breast cancer. The researchers noted that the association was found for sugar-sweetened beverages, fruit juices, and nectars, but not for artificially sweetened beverages.

Dr. Mathilde Touvier, the lead author of the study, emphasized the importance of reducing the consumption of sugary drinks for cancer prevention. She highlighted the need for public health policies to promote healthier beverage choices and reduce the intake of sugary drinks.

The study adds to existing evidence on the negative health effects of sugary beverages. Previous research has linked the consumption of sugary drinks to obesity, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular diseases. The World Health Organization recommends limiting the intake of free sugars, including those found in sugary drinks, to reduce the risk of noncommunicable diseases.
