Disney+ and Hulu no longer available for subscription through Apple
Disney+ and Hulu have recently made a significant change by no longer accepting user subscriptions through the App Store. This decision is primarily driven by commission fees rather than technological constraints.
Apple typically charges a 30% commission whenever an iPhone or iPad user signs up for a subscription through the App Store. Some services, like Netflix and Spotify, have opted out of allowing new signups through their iOS apps. Instead, users are directed to their websites to subscribe directly, bypassing the App Store’s commission fees.
Disney+ and Hulu have updated their support pages to inform users that new subscriptions cannot be made through Apple. However, existing subscribers who currently pay for these services through the App Store will not be affected by this change.
In a policy update in March 2022, Apple allowed ‘reader’ apps like Netflix and Spotify to link to their websites, enabling them to redirect users for new signups. Unfortunately, this move from Disney+ will render it ineligible for Apple’s Video Partner Program, impacting features like Siri integration, AirPlay, and Universal Search for users.
Interestingly, Disney+ and Hulu have recently implemented price hikes. As of October 17, Disney+ saw a $2 increase in its subscription cost, while Hulu’s prices went up by $1 to $2. Additionally, the services have initiated a crackdown on password-sharing, aiming to enhance their revenue streams and overall margins.
While these changes may inconvenience some users accustomed to App Store subscriptions, they are strategically aimed at improving the financial performance of Disney+ and Hulu. By bypassing the App Store’s commission fees and implementing price adjustments, the streaming services are working towards strengthening their bottom line and ensuring sustainable growth in the competitive streaming market.
