Deliciously Deadly Cakes on Streaming Platform Showcase Pensacola Bakers

Pensacola locals were in for a treat as they tuned into Prime Video’s latest baking miniseries, "Killer Cakes," which premiered this month, offering a thrilling culinary competition for viewers. The show featured eight talented bakers, including Shanelle Long, the executive cake artist at J’s Bakery and Cafe, and her baking partner, Eszter Summerlin, the owner of Eszti’s Custom Cakes.

Crafted by Blumhouse Television and the creators of "Cake Boss," the competition challenged four teams of two to create cakes that were not only visually stunning but also chillingly realistic. Hosted by actor Matthew Lillard, known for his roles in horror films like "Scream" and "Scooby-Doo," the show promised to push the boundaries of creativity and terror.

For Long, a self-proclaimed horror enthusiast, participating in the show was a nostalgic journey back to her childhood days of haunted houses and monster costumes. Her passion for cake decorating allowed her to merge her love for horror with her culinary skills, creating deliciously dreadful creations at J’s Bakery.

In the first challenge of "Killer Cakes," contestants were tasked with crafting a cake inspired by a horror movie killer, complete with gruesome special effects and flavors. Long and Summerlin drew inspiration from Pensacola’s coastal vibes, creating a killer mermaid-themed cake with tropical flavors like coconut and pineapple.

As the competition progressed, Long and Summerlin continued to impress with their creativity and teamwork. In the final challenge of creating a possessed cake, they delved into local folklore for inspiration, crafting a swamp witch-themed confection with intricate details and bold flavors.

Despite landing in third place in the finale, Long and Summerlin’s artistry and storytelling were commended by the judges. The duo’s dedication to their craft and unique approach to cake decorating showcased their skills and passion for the art.

Looking ahead, Long dreams of hosting her own cake competition show and continuing to push the boundaries of cake design at J’s Bakery. Summerlin, currently based in Germany due to her husband’s military assignment, plans to return to Pensacola and revive her bakery business, Estzi’s Custom Cakes.

As the curtains close on their "Killer Cakes" journey, Long and Summerlin remain grateful for the experience and the lasting friendship forged through their shared love of baking and creativity. Their time on the show may have come to an end, but their passion for crafting deliciously eerie cakes lives on, inspiring future generations of bakers in Pensacola.
