Popular TV Shows ‘Monk’ and ‘Doctor Foster’ to Be Adapted in India and Greece
The television adaptations industry is abuzz with new developments at MIPCOM, the international television market held in Cannes from Oct. 21-24. Among the exciting announcements are new local versions of popular procedural dramas Monk and Doctor Foster in the pipeline.
Banijay Asia and Disney+ Hotstar have revealed plans for an Indian adaptation of Monk, the beloved comedy crime detective series originally produced by NBCUniversal. This Indian version of Monk will mark the first Asian adaptation of the series and only the second worldwide, following a Turkish adaptation. The show, which originally starred Tony Shalhoub and ran for eight seasons on USA Network, is set to stream exclusively on Disney+ Hotstar and Hulu.
Deepak Dhar, CEO of Banijay Asia, expressed confidence in the upcoming Indian adaptation, citing the success of previous adaptations like The Good Wife and The Night Manager in resonating with Indian audiences.
On the other hand, BBC Studios Global Entertainment has announced a Greek adaptation of the acclaimed drama Doctor Foster. The original British series follows the story of Gemma Foster, played by Suranne Jones, a doctor who suspects her husband of infidelity. The psychological thriller has garnered international acclaim and has already been adapted in over a dozen countries. The Greek adaptation, titled Paihnidia Ekdikisis (Revenge Games), will feature Marilita Lambropoulou and Nikos Kouris in lead roles and is scheduled to premiere on ANT1 TV and ANT1+ in Spring 2025.
In addition to Doctor Foster, BBC Studios also unveiled plans for a Greek adaptation of its comedy series Ghosts, to be developed by Tanweer Productions for Star Channel.
These adaptations at MIPCOM underscore the global appeal of television content and the industry’s ongoing efforts to bring popular stories to new audiences in diverse markets. With Monk and Doctor Foster set for exciting local adaptations, viewers can look forward to fresh interpretations of these acclaimed series in the near future.
