Netflix Secures Sci-Fi Spec ‘Out There;’ Editor Stefan Grube Set to Make Directorial Debut
Netflix has secured the rights to the spec script Out There, a sci-fi thriller reminiscent of popular films like A Quiet Place and Cloverfield. The streaming giant plans to fast track the production of the film, marking the directorial debut of Stefan Grube, a seasoned film editor. The script for Out There was penned by Shane Van Dyke, Carey Van Dyke, and Ian Levy, with the Van Dykes having previously worked on projects like Don’t Worry Darling, and Levy contributing to Pay the Ghost.
The Picture Company, led by Alex Heineman and Andrew Rona, along with Josie Liang from Space Bandit, will produce the film. Nick Meyer from Sierra Pictures will serve as the executive producer for the project. Grube, known for his work in post-production, has collaborated with renowned directors such as Dan Trachtenberg, Jason Reitman, and JJ Abrams. His editing portfolio boasts notable films like 10 Cloverfield Lane, Tully, The Front Runner, and Star Wars: Episode IX, as well as creating impactful trailers over the years.
While the specific details of the plot are being kept under wraps, sources hint that Out There will follow a fractured family as they navigate through what could be the most challenging day of their lives. Meanwhile, The Picture Company is concurrently working on the post-production of Control, a high-concept thriller starring James McAvoy and Julianne Moore for Studiocanal. Additionally, the company is involved in producing Searchlight’s upcoming Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown, set for a Christmas release.
In other ventures, Josie Liang is also involved in producing an untitled heist project at Sony Pictures in collaboration with Plan B and Craig Gillespie. Grube is represented by CAA, Grandview, and attorney Gang Tyre Ramer, while the Van Dykes are working with CAA and Kaplan/Perrone. Levy’s representation includes Mangolia Entertainment and attorney Melissa Rogal, with all producers being represented by CAA. This acquisition of Out There by Netflix signals the streaming platform’s commitment to delivering compelling and captivating content to its global audience.
