Mike Flanagan Set to Pen ‘Carrie’ TV Series for Amazon Prime Video
Mike Flanagan, known for his work on "Doctor Sleep" and "The Exorcist," is now turning his attention to another iconic piece of intellectual property: Stephen King’s "Carrie." Flanagan is set to adapt King’s novel into an eight-episode series for Prime Video.
First brought to the screen by Brian De Palma in 1976, "Carrie" tells the story of a teenage girl named Carrie White who leads a sheltered life under the control of her domineering mother. However, Carrie discovers she possesses telekinetic powers, which she plans to use for revenge against those who have tormented her.
The upcoming series promises a modern retelling of the tale, focusing on Carrie’s struggles as she navigates high school after her father’s death, dealing with bullying and the emergence of her supernatural abilities.
Originally published in 1974, "Carrie" was famously portrayed by Sissy Spacek in the 1976 film adaptation. The cast also included John Travolta, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, Nancy Allen, Betty Buckley, and William Katt.
Mike Flanagan, along with Trevor Macy, will serve as executive producers for the limited series remake under their production company, Intrepid Pictures. Flanagan will also take on the role of showrunner and writer for the project.
Under an overall deal with Amazon MGM Studios, Flanagan and Intrepid are set to bring this reimagined version of "Carrie" to life. Melinda Nishioka will oversee the project for Amazon MGM.
Flanagan has a history of adapting Stephen King’s works, having previously worked on projects like "Doctor Sleep," "Gerald’s Game," and "The Life of Chuck." While he had plans to adapt "Revival," a project that was ultimately shelved, Flanagan’s dedication to King’s storytelling remains evident in his work.
In a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, Flanagan expressed his passion for King’s material, highlighting the script he wrote for "Revival" as one of his favorite pieces of work. Despite the setback, Flanagan continues to delve into the world of King’s creations, with "Carrie" marking his latest venture into the realm of supernatural storytelling.
