Disney Orders Sequel to Popular Animated Series Sofia the First: Royal Magic

Disney Jr. has recently announced the greenlight for a new series titled “Sofia the First: Royal Magic,” which serves as a continuation of the popular “Sofia the First” franchise. The original series debuted in 2012 with the animated television movie “Sofia the First: Once Upon A Princess” and has since become one of the most successful global preschool franchises for The Walt Disney Company. Notably, the “Sofia the First” series holds the record for the Top 3 cable TV telecasts for Girls 2-5 and has amassed over 755 million views on the Disney Junior YouTube channel to date. The new series, currently in production, is set to premiere in 2026 on Disney Jr. and Disney+.

Geared towards preschoolers and their families, “Sofia the First: Royal Magic” is created and executive produced by Emmy Award winner Craig Gerber. Ariel Winter, known for her role in “Modern Family,” will be reprising her role as the voice of Sofia, Disney’s first little girl princess. Further casting details are expected to be announced at a later date.

President of Disney Branded Television, Ayo Davis, expressed enthusiasm for the upcoming series, highlighting the enduring popularity of Sofia and the impact the character has had on young viewers. Craig Gerber also shared his excitement about returning to Sofia’s enchanting world and continuing her story. In the new series, Sofia will enroll in The Charmswell School for Royal Magic, where she will hone her magical abilities and forge friendships with her royal classmates.

“Sofia the First: Royal Magic” will revolve around Sofia’s discovery of her exceptional magical powers and her journey towards mastering them while navigating the challenges of royal school life. Each episode will feature two 11-minute stories accompanied by original songs, promising a blend of magic, friendship, and adventure.

Craig Gerber, known for his work on “Sofia the First” and “Elena of Avalor,” serves as the creator and executive producer of the new series. The creative team from “Firebuds” is also involved in the production, with Krystal Banzon as co-executive producer and story editor, Kris Wimberly as supervising director, and Craig Simpson as producer. “Sofia the First: Royal Magic” is being produced by Disney Television Animation, ensuring a continuation of the beloved franchise with fresh storytelling and enchanting adventures for young audiences.
