New Korean Revenge Series ‘The Tyrant’ to Premiere on Disney+
Park Hoon-jung, the mastermind behind “I Saw the Devil” and “New World,” has ventured into the realm of Korean espionage-revenge drama with his latest creation, “The Tyrant,” produced by Goldmoon Pictures.
Set to premiere on the Disney+ streaming platform on August 14, “The Tyrant” unfolds a gripping narrative around a high-tech virus stolen during a clandestine exchange between Korean and U.S. intelligence agencies. The theft triggers a high-stakes conflict as both nations scramble to reclaim the dangerous pathogen.
The miniseries features a stellar cast with Jo Yoon-su portraying the role of Chae Jagyeong, a relentless assassin seeking vengeance. Cha Seoung-won steps into the shoes of Lim Sang, a ruthless mercenary, while Kim Seon-ho embodies Director Choe, the head of the covert Korean project. Kim Kang-woo rounds out the ensemble as Paul, a U.S. intelligence operative entangled in the pursuit of the stolen virus.
The plot unfolds against the backdrop of a group of renegade scientists within the South Korean government embarking on the “Tyrant Project.” This initiative aims to develop a groundbreaking virus that could potentially elevate Korea’s global standing. However, when U.S. agents intercept the scheme and demand the surrender of all research samples, a tense standoff ensues. The project leader resorts to extreme measures, triggering a chain of events that pit rival factions against each other in a race to harness the virus for their own agendas.
Disney has made substantial investments to solidify its presence in the Korean TV landscape. In addition to “The Tyrant,” the entertainment giant has delved into other Korean dramas like “Moving,” which follows South Korean agents safeguarding super-powered children from exploitation by malevolent government forces. “The Worst of Evil” explores the story of an undercover detective infiltrating a dangerous new gang, while the acclaimed series “Big Bet” stars Choi Min-sik as a serial entrepreneur navigating ethically murky waters to expand his thriving casino enterprise.
With “The Tyrant” poised to captivate audiences with its blend of espionage, revenge, and high-stakes drama, viewers can anticipate a riveting narrative that delves into the intricate web of international intrigue and power dynamics.
