Necaxa Lands FX and Disney+ Latin America Docu Series with Eva Longoria and ‘Wrexham’ Pair
FX and Disney+ Latin America have announced a new documentary series centered around Club Necaxa, a revered Mexican soccer team. Executive producers and on-air personalities for the series include Eva Longoria, as well as the duo from “Welcome to Wrexham,” Ryan Reynolds, and Rob McElhenney.
This collaboration between FX/Disney+ follows the recent investment by Reynolds and McElhenney in Club Necaxa, a historic Mexican soccer club. The filming of the series has commenced in Aguascalientes, Mexico, where the team has relocated after facing challenges in its original home of Mexico City. The show will be bilingual, featuring content in both English and Spanish.
The upcoming series draws inspiration from FX’s “Welcome to Wrexham,” which chronicled the transformation of a Welsh soccer team following Reynolds and McElhenney’s acquisition of the club in 2021. The focus will be on Necaxa’s journey to reclaim its position as a premier Mexican team, with owner Eva Longoria enlisting the support of her influential acquaintances, including new co-owners Reynolds and McElhenney.
Reynolds and McElhenney’s vision for Club Necaxa aligns with the successful template they applied to Wrexham. Together with Longoria and other investors, they aim to elevate the club’s reputation and expand its global presence, capitalizing on the growing demand for soccer content in the TV and streaming landscape.
The series will be produced by Longoria’s Hyphenate Media Group, in partnership with Banijay executive Cris Abrego. Alongside Longoria, McElhenney, Reynolds, and Abrego, the executive producing team includes Rachelle Mendez, Nick Frenkel, Jackie Cohn, George Dewey, and Alex Fumero. The project will also involve More Better Productions, Maximum Effort Productions, and 3 Arts Entertainment.
Reynolds and McElhenney, through their R.R. McReynolds Company, have a history of successful investments and entrepreneurial ventures. The duo’s involvement in Club Necaxa signifies a strategic move to replicate the success they’ve achieved with Wrexham AFC.
FX’s “Welcome to Wrexham” has been a hit, with its third season premiering on May 2. The show has captured the revitalization of Wrexham town alongside the resurgence of its football club, resulting in critical acclaim and multiple Emmy Awards, including the accolade for best unstructured reality program.
