Suffolk producer puts a new spin on Beverly Hills Cop theme for Netflix
A music producer from Suffolk has contributed to the revamping of an iconic theme tune for a new Hollywood film, downplaying his role by stating he simply “polished it off.” Phil Harding, based in Bury St Edmunds, known for his work with artists like Kylie Minogue and Boyzone in the 1980s and 1990s, teamed up with fellow music maestro Ian Curnow to work on Harold Faltermeyer’s Axel F for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.
The duo was brought on board by Grammy award-winning composer Lorne Balfe, recognized for his work on films like Terminator Genisys and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. Harding mentioned that despite his supposed retirement, he found it hard to decline such a significant project when approached. He explained that they enhanced the original tune by adding heavy drumbeats, guitars, and a saxophone to give it a more robust sound, in collaboration with Balfe who had already made substantial contributions to the new version.
Working from their professional home studios in Bury St Edmunds, Harding and Curnow spent about four days fine-tuning the track to match the quality expected in Hollywood. Harding shared that Balfe specifically requested an 80s sound reminiscent of Harding’s past work, aiming to transport the audience back to the era of the original movie while offering a fresh take.
The new film, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, directed by Mark Molloy, features Eddie Murphy reprising his role as Det Axel Foley as he delves into a conspiracy. Harding expressed his anticipation of seeing a credit for their work on screen, highlighting the satisfaction of being part of such a high-profile project.
The collaboration between Harding, Curnow, and Balfe underscores the intricate process of modernizing a classic theme for a contemporary audience while paying homage to the nostalgia of the original production. Their efforts showcase the seamless blend of past and present in the realm of film soundtracks, offering viewers a reimagined experience of a beloved cinematic universe.
