Netflix Reveals New Spin-off Series ‘En el barro’ from ‘El Marginal’

Netflix, Underground, and Telemundo Studios have joined forces to create a spin-off to the popular Argentinian series, “El Marginal,” which aired for five seasons between 2016 and 2022. The new series, titled “En el Barro,” will continue the story of Gladys Guerra in a setting called “La Quebrada,” where a group of women will confront the challenges of the prison environment.

The announcement was made through a post by CheNetflix, translated into English, stating, “But of course, Gladys’ story had to continue. In the series “En el Barro” a group of women, united by adversity, will face the hostility of the prison regime in “La Quebrada.” This spin-off will delve deeper into the character of Gladys Guerra, who was introduced in the first season of “El Marginal” and appeared throughout the subsequent seasons.

The spin-off is being helmed by Sebastián Ortega, the co-creator of “El Marginal,” and production commenced in July 2024. The cast of “La Quebrada” includes Ana Garibaldi, Valentina Zenere, Rita Cortese, Lorena Vega, Marcelo Subiotto, Carolina Ramírez, and Ana Rujas. Additionally, Juana Molina is set to make a guest appearance alongside Gerardo Romano and Cecilia Rosetto.

According to a synopsis provided by TTV, the series will follow Gladys Guerra and other inmates as they face a life-threatening situation while being transported to La Quebrada prison. The group of women, known as “Las Embarradas,” will navigate the challenges posed by the prison regime and different factions within the facility, drawing upon their personal histories to survive and adapt to their new environment.

Fans of high-stakes female prison dramas like “Wentworth,” “The Yard,” and “Orange is the New Black” are likely to find “La Quebrada” an intriguing addition to their watchlist. The series promises a compelling narrative set within the complex dynamics of a female prison community, offering a fresh perspective on survival and solidarity in the face of adversity.

As anticipation builds for the release of the spin-off series to “El Marginal,” viewers can expect a gripping and immersive storytelling experience that explores the resilience and camaraderie of a group of women navigating the challenges of life behind bars.
