A new study has found that regular exercise may help reduce the risk of developing severe COVID-19 symptoms. The study analyzed data from over 48,000 adults who tested positive for COVID-19 between January and October 2020. Researchers looked at the participants’ self-reported exercise habits in the year leading up to the pandemic and categorized them as consistently inactive, some activity, or consistently meeting physical activity guidelines.
Results showed that individuals who were consistently inactive were more likely to be hospitalized, admitted to the intensive care unit, and die from COVID-19 compared to those who met the recommended physical activity guidelines. The risk of severe outcomes decreased as the level of physical activity increased.
Dr. Robert Sallis, the lead researcher of the study, highlighted the importance of staying active, especially during the pandemic. He emphasized that regular exercise not only has numerous health benefits but can also play a significant role in reducing the severity of COVID-19 symptoms.
