‘HBO Gives Green Light to ‘Green Lantern’ Series’

HBO has recently announced the development of a new series titled Lanterns, centered around the iconic Green Lantern characters from DC Comics. The news was confirmed by HBO Max on social media, teasing that the show will be “coming soon.”

According to a report from Variety, Lanterns will be spearheaded by showrunner Chris Mundy, known for his work on acclaimed series like True Detective: Night Country and Ozark. The upcoming series is set to consist of eight episodes, promising an intriguing narrative for viewers.

Joining Mundy in the creative process are Damon Lindelof, known for his work on Watchmen and The Leftovers, and Tom King, recognized for his contributions to Mister Miracle and Supergirl. Lindelof and King will co-write and executive produce Lanterns alongside Mundy, setting the stage for a dynamic collaboration.

Casey Bloys, chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, expressed excitement about Lanterns, stating that the series aligns with the vision for the DC Universe crafted by James Gunn and Peter Safran. The show marks a significant addition to the DC Universe’s live-action lineup, ushering in a new era for fans of the beloved comic book franchise.

Lanterns is poised to delve into the stories of Green Lantern Corps members Hal Jordan and John Stewart. Stewart will be portrayed as a fresh recruit, while Jordan will embody the role of a seasoned veteran within the Corps. The narrative will unfold as the two Lanterns find themselves entangled in a mysterious murder investigation in the heart of America, promising a blend of intrigue and suspense.

As of now, details regarding the cast and episode directors for Lanterns remain under wraps, keeping fans eagerly anticipating further announcements. The series aims to breathe new life into the Green Lantern legacy, following the lukewarm reception of the 2011 Green Lantern film starring Ryan Reynolds.

Despite past setbacks in reviving the character on the big screen, Lanterns offers a fresh perspective on the Green Lantern mythos, setting the stage for an exciting exploration of the iconic superhero universe. Additionally, fans can look forward to Nathan Fillion’s portrayal of Green Lantern Guy Gardner in James Gunn’s upcoming Superman film, slated for release in the near future.
