Netflix Reveals BET, a Fresh Live-Action Take on Kakegurui

Netflix is gearing up for another live-action anime adaptation, adding to its roster of hits like One Piece and Yu Yu Hakusho. The streaming service has announced its cast for a new series called BET, a live-action adaptation of Kakegurui. BET will feature a talented ensemble including Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, Eve Edwards, Clara Alexandrova, Hunter Cardinal, Anwen O’Driscoll, Aviva Mongillo, and Ryan Sutherland.

Set in an elite boarding school, BET will explore a group of students navigating a cutthroat hierarchy and engaging in underground gambling. The series is currently in production in Toronto, Canada, with Simon Barry directing and writing the drama. With ten episodes planned, BET aims to introduce the world of Kakegurui to a broader audience beyond Japan.

“In BET, the boarding school’s hierarchy is upturned when Yumeko, a mysterious transfer student arrives from Japan with a dark secret and a gambling prowess that puts her in the crosshairs of the powerful Student Council. Ultimately, her revenge quest threatens to upend the school’s status quo entirely,” Netflix shared in a synopsis of the series.

Kakegurui, the source material for BET, originated as a manga in March 2014 by Homura Kawamoto and Toru Naomura. The manga is ongoing, and it received an anime adaptation by MAPPA in September 2017. A live-action drama based on Kakegurui premiered in Japan in 2018 and gained popularity on Netflix. Now, Netflix is venturing into a Hollywood adaptation of the high-stakes thriller with BET.

Fans of Kakegurui and newcomers alike can anticipate the debut of BET on Netflix. The streaming service continues to expand its anime adaptation offerings, bringing beloved stories to a global audience. Stay tuned for more updates on BET and its release date.
