Amazon pulls Prime Video movie following single Ofcom complaint

The British media regulator Ofcom has taken action against Amazon for breaching its code by featuring a scene in the film Pamasahe that showed a baby alongside sexual activity. The 2022 film, rated 18, was removed from Prime Video after Ofcom received a complaint from a viewer who was dissatisfied with Amazon’s response. The scene in question was found to violate the Protection of Children Act 1978 by showing a child in the same frame as sexual content.

Ofcom promptly informed the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) about the issue, leading to the discovery of the problematic frame. Deadline reported that Amazon removed the film from its platform following discussions with the BBFC regarding the code violation. Amazon defended its content-checking procedures but acknowledged the need for ongoing refinement in their content policies.

Pamasahe, directed by Roman Perez Jr, tells the story of a destitute mother who turns to sex work to travel to Manila with her baby in search of her husband. The House of Lords recently passed a Media Bill that will extend Ofcom’s oversight to streaming services like Netflix and Disney, previously unregulated by the watchdog. This move follows concerns raised after the release of Baby Reindeer, a series created by Richard Gadd that gained popularity for its intense storyline.

Baby Reindeer, featuring Gadd as a harassed comedian pursued by Martha Scott, garnered significant attention after its quiet release on Netflix. The real-life elements of the show resonated with audiences, propelling it to the top of Netflix’s viewing charts in the UK and US within days. However, the show’s success also sparked debates about safeguarding and the identification of real-life inspirations behind its characters, drawing criticism from Gadd and industry figures like Richard Osman.
